I'm Jeanie — a Nurse Practitioner, and a woman who went looking for real answers about her own menopause and found something bigger instead. This is the story of how I got here, and why I built Vitality Through Transition the way I did.
My interest in functional medicine was first sparked by an article — one that described a practitioner digging into the root cause of a patient's iron absorption issue. Instead of another round of IV iron, they went looking for what was actually happening in the gut. What they found didn't just help the person feel better — it meant they never needed another infusion again.
That stuck with me. I had spent my career watching people get treated around a problem instead of through it, and here was proof that going deeper actually worked. It planted a question I couldn't shake: what else were we missing by only treating what was right in front of us?
I didn't go looking for functional medicine because of a patient, though. I went looking for it because of myself.
I started looking into functional medicine for myself after going through menopause and hitting wall after wall with no real answers. I was put on an estrogen cream first — messy, inconvenient, and it made intimacy feel like a chore instead of something that came naturally.
When I brought that back to my provider, the solution wasn't to look deeper. It was to add more prescriptions.
And even then, I was only getting partial relief. On top of that, I couldn't always get the specific prescription I needed — insurance restrictions meant only certain pharmacies would fill it, and I was limited on which estrogen options I could even use.
I remember thinking there had to be more to this than just taking a bunch of pills and still only feeling half like myself.
My regular practice is in hematology-oncology, where insurance regulations shape almost every decision. When I order IV iron for a patient with iron deficiency anemia, I have a brand I prefer — it carries less risk of reaction, means a shorter chair time, and only needs two doses instead of three or five. But insurance companies often dictate which brand I'm allowed to use, regardless of what's actually best for the patient in front of me. It's frustrating every single time.
I once had a patient in my office for elevated hemoglobin and hematocrit — a younger man who told me he'd been seen for the same issue before, related to needing testosterone. He said it had become so difficult to even get in with a provider to prescribe it that he'd started using unprescribed anabolic steroids instead, which only made his levels worse.
"How could I help him differently if he weren't sitting here dealing with insurance regulations and guidelines at all?"
That question sat with me. I wanted to see him — and people like him — live a normal life without fatigue, with normal hormone levels, without one problem creating another. That was the moment I decided to take my first real step.
A former coworker of mine — another Nurse Practitioner who, like me, worked in hematology-oncology — started studying functional medicine about five years ago. I watched her business grow and thrive, and I listened to many of her group coaching sessions along the way. Watching and reading what she shared helped me realize there were pieces missing from traditional medicine, and that I wanted to help people on a deeper level — to help them get their life back.
What sets functional medicine apart, to me, is getting all the way down to the root of the problem. Traditional medicine often puts a band-aid on the issue and treats the symptom rather than what's actually causing it. I wanted to be on the other side of that.
